How to watch iQIYI, Tencent Video, Mango TV and Chinese live TV in Malaysia

No time difference: live TV from China in sync

Malaysia is on UTC+8 all year, in both West Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru) and East Malaysia (Kuching, Kota Kinabalu), exactly the same as Beijing, and neither observes daylight saving. China’s evening prime time is also Malaysia’s evening, so after dinner you can switch on the TV and watch the same live broadcast at the same moment as viewers in China.

Chinese families in Malaysia celebrate Lunar New Year too, so the Gala starts at eight right after the reunion dinner, and you count down to midnight together with China. See watching the Spring Festival Gala abroad for the details.

International versions vs. China versions

In Malaysia, some Chinese video apps come in an international or overseas edition. These work here without any help, but their content differs from the China versions: many dramas, variety shows and live channels aren’t in them, or arrive later. The China versions have the full catalogue, but open them in Malaysia and you’ll often see “only available in mainland China”.

Homeway works with the China versions: iQIYI and its TV app, Tencent Video and its TV app, Mango TV and its TV app, plus Yangshipin, Bilibili, Youku, Migu Video, and QQ Music and NetEase Cloud Music. The full list is on supported apps. With Homeway on, the China versions show the same catalogue you’d see in China. The international versions already work in Malaysia, so they don’t need Homeway.

Memberships work the same way: to watch members-only content in a China version, sign in to your own membership account in that app. Homeway only deals with region restrictions; it doesn’t sell memberships.

Which TVs and boxes to use in Malaysia

Speed: fibre is usually plenty, Wi-Fi is the question

For reference, 1080p needs a steady 5 Mbps or more and 4K needs 15–25 Mbps, which the usual home fibre plans in Malaysian cities cover comfortably. Homeway only relays the playback authorization requests; the video downloads from the server nearest to you, with no detour.

When it does buffer, Wi-Fi is the usual suspect: with the router where the fibre comes in, a TV a few walls away or upstairs gets a weak signal, which is especially common in two- and three-storey terrace houses. Connect the TV or box by Ethernet where you can, or add a mesh router. More fixes are in what to do about buffering.

FAQ

Is there a time difference for live TV from China?

No. Malaysia and Beijing are both on UTC+8 with no daylight saving, so the CCTV evening news is at 7 p.m. in Malaysia and the 2027 Spring Festival Gala starts at 8 p.m. on February 5. East and West Malaysia share the same time.

I already use the international version. Do I still need Homeway?

The international versions already work in Malaysia, so you don’t need Homeway for them. But their content differs from the China versions, and many shows are only in the China version; to watch those, use the China version with Homeway.

Can I install Homeway on my Astro set-top box?

Generally not. Set-top boxes from Astro and other providers usually don’t allow third-party apps. Use a Xiaomi box or another Android TV or Google TV device on another HDMI port, alongside Astro.

Can I sign in to a membership account I registered in China?

Yes. Homeway doesn’t change your accounts: sign in to the China version of the app with the membership account you registered in China, and your benefits are unchanged. Homeway itself doesn’t provide video memberships.

Which currency will I pay in?

Open the pricing page from Malaysia and prices are shown in ringgit (MYR). New users start with a free 7-day trial, no card required, and after it one phone can keep using Homeway for free.
